President's Message 2009 - 2010 Last year we celebrated the club’s 50th Anniversary and were pleased to entertain our first president, Polly Logan along with other past presidents and charter members at our festivities. Thanks to all the hard work of the club members we had a wonderful presentation at the Historical Society highlighting the last 50 years. The President’s Tea was a special celebration with the Federation President, District Director and area Club Presidents helping us commemorate this occasion. Our Standard Flower Show, “A Golden Retrospective” took us back over themes of the last decades with a special afternoon tea. The biggest highlight of the year was the arrival of Takako Kohri, President of our Sister Club in Japan, to take part in the education displays of our Flower Show. This year we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of becoming members of the National Garden Clubs, Inc (NGC) – New England Region and The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, South Shore District. The National Council is the largest community service organization of its kind in the world. As we enter our 50th year of service to our community, we can proudly look back at various contributions to the landscape and environment of our town. Our projects have included planting and maintaining gardens at the Lightkeeper’s Cottage, the Historical Society and Constitution Park. Our Arbor Day programs and Junior Gardeners have introduced the joy of gardening and the environment to students. Our scholarships help students in their desire to continue their education in the environment. We keep alive the pleasure of working with plant materials for the elderly with Garden Therapy. Through our Memorial Books, we have provided books for the library covering all aspects of gardening and the environment. Our newest Conservation effort at the RTC has been fruitful with the recycling bin for printer cartridges, cell phones, ipods, video games and digital cameras This year the board members have again planned a wide variety of wonderful programs and workshops to continue our ongoing efforts in promoting interest in all aspects of gardening and conservation. We hope that everyone will take advantage either through hands-on, lectures or volunteering all that the club has to offer.
